At first this was just going to be a t-shirt design. Then I thought, why not try doing a different illustration style to what I am used to? I used this design as a way to experiment with styles.
At first this was just going to be a t-shirt design. Then I thought, why not try doing a different illustration style to what I am used to? I used this design as a way to experiment with styles.
Top left: Illustration Style I am used to.
Bottom right: Different style using no line-work; aimed to be more like a painting.
I first worked on the illustration in the bottom right style. To be frank, I felt uncomfortable. I kept thinking.. "If I could get through this to the end maybe I'll learn to like it... or maybe I can prove to myself I can do another style..".
Fortunately, I did make it to the end. But then I felt the need to do the illustration again but in my normal style: top left. I felt so comfortable doing line-work. It suddenly felt right to me. Moral of the the story is, subverting from what your usual style/type of work is good - it makes you recognise why you choose and like certain elements.

My personal tip: if you are searching for your style - I think it is about being comfortable and following your instincts. That's where you create your own identity and style. Don't always follow the trends.
